The US Justice Department's probe into the Jack Abramoff scandal, where defendants admitted that they conspired to use campaign contributions to bribe lawmakers, opens up the possibility of genuine change in the way Washington operates. The paid persuaders of Washington and their wealthy clients are worried that if prosecutors begin to assert as a matter of routine that lobbyist gifts and campaign contributions are a form of bribery, it could boost the decades-old effort to break the nexus of money and politics in the US capital.

Five essential elements are outlined in building a lasting peace through education, including establishment of a public education system that has compulsory attendance for all children and youth.
