Potential candidates for Nobel prizes have occasionally lobbied for the awards, but the best way to secure a Nobel has always been to perform admirably in the nominated field. Although Nobel committee members have excluded nominees or chosen favorites over the years, the awards system basically works well at maintaining fairness.

The non-stop jet-setting, globe-trotting demands on laureates are an indication of the huge international prestige that attends to the Nobels. But the awards are as much an imposition and burden as they are an opener of doors

Nobel laureates are famous all around the world for their accomplishments, particularly in countries that have not produced many Nobel winners of their own. Future expectations for laureates are high, although they will have less time to work on their research or writing if they are giving interviews or speaking at conferences.
