New college, new milestone

Article Abstract:

Hermione Lee has become the first female professor at New College, Oxford University, and the first woman to be appointed Goldsmiths' professor of English literature. Lee, who wrote a best-selling biography of Virginia Woolf, was keenly interested in the creative process while holding a chair in the English department at the University of York, and former colleagues hope that her enthusiasm for contemporary authors will be retained. Lee firmly believes biographies should focus on the relationship between an author's works and their life, and she is keen to continuing promoting this view while at Oxford.
