The credibility gap

Article Abstract:

Teaching tends to be seen as a second-class activity compared with research in British universities. There is a need to approach teaching from a different point of view, as an intellectual activity. Staff development programs tend to focus on practical issues, and university teachers are often told how to carry out their jobs. There is a need to allow them to develop their own solutions, and to explore new ways of course delivery that meet universities' aims.

Danger in statutory controls

Article Abstract:

The university system in New Zealand has undergone radical changes since 1990 but academics, while not averse to other changes, are concerned that issues addressed in a recent green paper are unhelpful. The green paper states that universities must be driven by market forces and see students as customers. Academics argue that universities will lose their autonomy and will no longer be able to be the 'conscience of society'.
