Universal joint, lens grinder, balance-spring mechanism, St Paul's..
Article Abstract:
The life and career of Robert Hooke are examined in the light of the publication of the book "The Curious Life of Robert Hooke: The Man Who Measured London". Hooke, who lived from 1635-1703, perfected the universal joint that is still used for the drive-shafts of cars, devised the balance spring mechanism to drive an accurate pocket watch and developed a prototype lens-grindng machine that was a vital part of the experimental foundation for the European scientific revolution. He is regarded as an extraordinary polymath, original scientific thinker, outstandingly adept experimentalist, architect, surveyor and instrument designer, but he is less well remembered than contemporaries such as Christopher Wren and Isaac Newton.

Pure pleasure and 'other' literary pursuits
Article Abstract:
Derek Attridge, a professor at York University, argues, in his new book "The Singularity of Literature", that at the core of western aesthetics lies a "knot of three interwoven characteristics", innovation, the uniqueness of each art work, and finally its otherness. Attridge contends that literature does not actually offer a vicarious experience, rather it stages the power of language in multiple ways, promoting the experience that is being written about.

Playing at God, but working for all humanity
Article Abstract:
An analysis of how technology has affected social change. It is noted that while technology has helped to free the minds and lives of many, there are still people, even in developed Western societies, who continue to demonise technology and fight against any change.
