V-cs call for Sykes to be sacked from Hefce

Article Abstract:

Vice-chancellors are demanding that Sir Richard Sykes, rector of Imperial College London, be removed from his position on the board of the Higher Education Funding Council for England (Hefce) after he branded a number of universities "third class" in newspaper articles in which he claimed that the government's current "bums on seats" policy towards higher education drained money away from top-class institutions into institutions filled with students who had failed to learn enough at school. Vice-chancellors have questioned whether Sykes' comments breach Hefce's code of best practice for board members, which requires members to observe the highest levels of objectivity and impartiality.

Top-up fees are neither our saviour nor Satan

Article Abstract:

The president of the Institute for Higher Education Policy, Washington, US, analyses the debate raging in the UK about the introduction of variable top-up fees in order to help finance higher education and argues that a focus on access to higher education must not be lost in the debate about fees. He contends that the most important aspect of any change to the funding of higher education is not whether fees can vary from university to university, but rather that enough investment is being made in needs-based student grants to ensure that students from more disadvantaged groups have the same level of access to the best facilities as more well off students.
