Vintage brews get the Midas touch

Article Abstract:

The adjunct associate professor of anthropology at the University of Pennsylvania examines the history of winemaking and viniculture in the light of his efforts to make a wine similar to that drunk by people in the period before Christ and in the time of the pharaohs of Egypt. Biomolecular archaeology has been used to examine the contents of ancient wine storage vessels in an attempt to identify the constituents of the wines, from which information modern brewers have been able to make what they believe to be decent facsimiles of ancient beverages.
