The University of Cyprus has 5,000 students but by 2015 the university aims to double student intake to 10,000. The national university welcomed its first students in 1992 and currently around a tenth of students are from overseas.

The University of Malta was established in 1592 and is the oldest seat of learning in the Commonwealth outside of the UK. The university has 9,608 students and 8 percent of full-time students are foreign.
