The ruinous ghost of empire past
Article Abstract:
The notion of empire has for many generations played a key role in ensuring that there has been a distinct British or English identity. This identity is being lost as the British Empire fades away. British people can no longer classify themselves as the 'master race,' and are now very uncertain about their true identity. The loss of imperial power has been one of the driving forces behind the turn to Europe over recent decades.
