Warsaw's mad March
Article Abstract:
Polish academics were angry in Mar 1968 about the increase in censorship and Poland's bad economic performance. Reforms had been introduced in 1956 but the academics felt they were failing to take effect. On Mar 8 1968 police took over Warsaw University and many academics were sacked or forced to leave the country. The mathematics, philosophy and political economy departments of Warsaw University were abolished.

Chernobyl's 20th anniversary stirs interest
Article Abstract:
A flurry of academic interest has been generated by the 20th anniversary of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster. Kintston University plans a Chernobyl-related exhibition in May, called '20 Years, 20 Lives!', and the annual Contemporary Ukrainian Studies lecture in Cambridge was given by Alla Yaroshinskaya, Ukrainian reporter who campaigned against Soviet suppression of information about the contamination.

EU to give scholarships to expelled Belarussians
Article Abstract:
Belarussian students have welcomed a Euro 5 million EU scholarship programme for students expelled from universities for their political activities. The three-year, EU scheme will fund tuition fees and maintenance grants for 27 undergraduate places and 170 postgraduate places at the European Humanities University.
