Welcome spending spree

Article Abstract:

The United Kingdom government is providing additional funds for higher education after carrying out a comprehensive spending review. There has been an increase in funding of 3% for England and Scotland, taking inflation into account, though data for Northern Ireland and Wakes have yet to be released. Additional funding for research is needed for facilities and equipment as well as staff. Students paying fees expect facilities and teaching to be of a high quality.

Active role for a vigorous player

Article Abstract:

The United Kingdom Committee of Vice-Chancellors and Principals aims to stress the strengths of higher education in the United Kingdom, and present a national, unified voice for the sector. Higher education is important for wealth generation and economic development. Quality is an important issue, but funding must be sufficient, or quality will suffer. External checks can be used to ensure that quality is achieved, so long as funding is sufficient.
