Sherry Turkle is a sociology of science professor from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and has studied the impact of multi-user domains (MUDs) on people's lives. Some people can damage their health through spending 80 hours weekly in role plays, while others can benefit from experimenting with new qualities and character traits. New technology has the potential for helping users understand themselves in ways that only academics and analysts could.

The JOIDES Resolution is a research ship which is to drill up to five miles into the Arctic ocean floor seeking evidence that global warming could trigger another ice age. It also contains laboratories where sediment is examined for density, radioactivity, magnetism and composition, and the scientists may be able to pinpoint activity to within 10 years.
