Work to school transition

Article Abstract:

The advantages and disadvantages of hiring part-time faculty to teach in postsecondary vocational schools are discussed. Part-time instructors are a boon because they can provide an insider's perspective of the workplace to students. On the other hand, part-time instructors' motives could be mainly to earn extra money, such that they may not put the necessary effort to be effective teachers, or they may not possess the necessary teaching skills in the first place. Some solutions to difficulties in selecting and training part-time faculty members for vocational schools are presented.

School-to-work for everyone

Article Abstract:

The School-to-Work Opportunities Act provides government grants for planning and implementing school-to-work programs but the racial, sexual and social inequalities often hamper its aim to reach all students who want to become a part of the workforce. These programs are still discriminatory and more expansion and participation of women are essential to make them unbiased. Several methods to bring about equality in school-to-work system are described which can be of use to administrators.

Don't let "school-to-work" swallow tech prep

Article Abstract:

The reauthorized Perkins Act is likely to sideline the tech prep program, thereby hindering the growth of students' stature through specialized vocational training. Teachers, students, parents, school boards and business people, who have worked hard to usher in the tech prep program, are opposed to the merging of the tech prep with the school-to-work legislation, the Perkins Act.
