RF Micro Devices opens GaAs Fab
Article Abstract:
RF Micro Devices (RFMD) of Greensboro, NC, has opened its new gallium arsenide heterojunction bipolar transistor (GaAs HBT) fabrication facility. The GaAs HBT process has been exclusively licensed to RFMD by TRW for commercial wireless applications below 10 GHz. Both TRW and RFMD processes are similar, with TRW's being on 75 mm wafers and RFMD's being on 100 mm wafers. RFMD President and CEO David A. Norbury stated that the fabrication facility only took 16 months to put up and that he was pleased with the overall support given by TRW.

US: NEW POWER ELECTRONICS RESEARCH CENTRE
Article Abstract:
With the aim of making the US the world's most electrically efficient energy user, it is establishing a national research centre for power electronics in Virginia. The centre's US$ 60mn funding for its first five years will come from industry, five universities and the National Science Foundation which is giving US$ 12.5mn. The centre wants to unify the systems that control 60% of power used in the US which would bring a 30% reduction in energy consumption in ten years and do away with the need for 640 power plants.
