Communication protocol standards for space data systems
Article Abstract:
The Consultative Committee for Space Data Systems (CCSDS) is an international organization that develops standard techniques for space-mission data handling. The services and data communications must operate from space to ground, ground to space, and space to space. The CCSDS Internet service works at the network layer to provide the hook that permits the full stack of OSI protocols to be operated throughout a space data system. Space data systems must provide two kinds of service: one service to solve the problems of the space data systems environment and the other to address user problems. CCSDS is working to give users the simultaneous choice of high-performance specialized space data system services and protocols and conventional OSI services and protocols. Using 'off the shelf' OSI techniques could reduce cost and increase flexibility.

Formal Description Techniques
Article Abstract:
Formal description techniques (FDT) are necessary to Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) so that correct and compatible implementations can be developed. Subgroups were formed to deal with specific areas of FDTs. Subgroup A deals with architectural specifications for Subgroup B and C description languages. Subgroup B is working on an FDT based on the Extended Finite State Machine Cocept. Subgroup C deals with the development of an FDT based on the Temporal Ordering of Interaction Primitives. Sample specifications of Subgroup B and Subgroup C are given in the appendices.
