On the theory of the electrocardiogram
Article Abstract:
A model of the human electrocardiogram (ECG) is developed based on a bidomain model of the heart that defines the intracellular space of cardiac muscle cells as one, continuous domain and the extracellular fluid matrix as a second, continuous domain. Each domain is an average of current densities, potentials, and conductivities, and functions as a passive conductor, while being separated at the cell membrane. The microscopic and macroscopic (the volume conductor problem) aspects and impacts of the cardiac bioelectrical model are developed and extended to the analysis of spatial and temporal distributions of normal and abnormal heart actions and their electromagnetic effects as record by an ECG. Details of the Miller-Geselowitz model and the role of the biomedical engineer are described.

Experimental localized radar cross sections of aircraft
Article Abstract:
Very-high-resolution microwave images of several Boeing 727 and Lockheed L-1011 aircraft landing at the Philadelphia International Airport were analyzed to determine the localized radar cross sections (RCS) of parts of the aircraft. Unique attributes of each aircraft were clearly identifiable, validating the superiority of the technology for aircraft RCS measurement and analysis. The research is being performed at the University of Pennsylvania's Valley Forge Research Center. Details of the experiment are described.
