Distributed simulation of discrete event systems
Article Abstract:
Discrete event dynamical systems used as models in flexible manufacturing, computer systems, and other such applications are complex and lack adequate performance evaluation tools. Simulation is thus often the only evaluation method available. The design and operation of the simulation will be affected by whether the objective is to understand the system's behavior, to generate estimates of average performance measures, to help the selection of design parameters and-or operating strategies, or to fit a simple performance model to measurements of the system. The slowness of these simulations suggests the use of multiple processors, which can help simulate the operation of many components of a system running in parallel. Decomposing simulation into tasks that can be run on separate processors is described, and existing synchronization algorithms are discussed.

An Ada-compatible distributed database management system
Article Abstract:
Computer Corp of America (CCA) has developed a prototype distributed data manager (DDM) centered around the Adaplex language. The DDM is a homogeneous distributed database management system built on top of a group of local data managers in a DEC VAX computer network. It provides transparent distribution and replication of data to support high availability and efficient access. DDM supports distributed databases designed in a top-down fashion. It goes beyond systems based on relational technology (like R* and INGRES) to provide advanced data modeling and ease of use. Facilities it provides include: an integrated global schema; complete physical data independence; interleaved execution of concurrent transactions; and dynamic integration of new sites into the system. Work is underway on a full function distributed DBMS product, based on the DDM technology.
