Adjustable-speed AC drives
Article Abstract:
Adjustable-speed ac drives are a viable strategy for meeting the varying requirements of mechanical loads. The evolution of power semiconductor technology and great variety of ac drives and converters offer many combinations of solution choices. Power electronics are providing compact, powerful controllable ac drives with improved efficiency and dynamic performance and without moving parts. Applications of power electronics in controllable ac motors include switching devices, such as power MOSFETs and thyristors, and converters with and without dc links. Several examples of industrial adjustable speed ac drives are described. Evolving ac derived technologies will result in all digital, adaptive, and self-adjusting controls; optimizing control strategies; lower cost converters; and higher power density machines.

A Flash-Type Frequency-to-Code Converter
Article Abstract:
Fast and linear frequency-to-code convertor (fDC) finds many applications as frequency modulation decoders, fast frequency counters and in data acquisition systems. A new fDC circuit is described. Its principle of operation is explained. A block diagram shows the frequency generator.
