Mastering the challenge of optoelectronic computing
Article Abstract:
The Optoelectronic Computing Systems Center at the University of Colorado and Colorado State University is one of the National Science Foundation's Engineering Research Centers. The center's five goals are to expand the intellectual foundations of optoelectronic computing and signal processing systems and devices; to discover and demonstrate new knowledge by creating proof-of-principle machines; to educate students in optoelectronic systems and devices; to transfer technology quickly from the university laboratories to industry; and to provide leadership and outreach in the field. The four major programs at the center are the optical connectionist program, optical signal processing program, digital optical computing program, and materials and devices program; each is described. Also described are materials and devices, the center environment, and industrial involvement.

Digital computing with optics
Article Abstract:
Trends in digital computer architectures are reviewed, and potential roles for optical technology in digital computing systems are examined, in particular the semantic difference between 'an optical computer' and 'a computer with optics.' Following a review of the effect of architectures, electronic technology and optical technology on optics used in digital computing, use of optics in current systems are discussed, including memory and local area networks. Computer architectures being studied for use in optical computer systems are described, and implementation issues are addressed. Such device characteristics as wavelength, contrast, speed and power requirements are important implementation issues. The probability of success of the use of optics in digital computers is explored; currently optics are limited to use as interconnects on several levels.
