Model based processing of signals: a state space approach
Article Abstract:
Linear, state space and model-based methods for nonlinear estimation problems encountered in signal and data analysis are presented. State space parameterization of linear models can provide an elegant tool for exposing structures that are present in a given problem. When combined with robust noise suppression techniques through the use of singular value decomposition, computationally simpler model-based methods which efficiently moderate signal-to-noise rations result. These methods are statistically efficient. State space methods of nonlinear estimation result in a rich class of algorithms which can be utilized for signal processing problems. The resulting algorithms are compatible with multiprocessor applications. State space problem formulation is an alternate approach to exposing the structure inherent in signal processing problems, and results in other methods that complement polynomial-based methods. The result is a better understanding of the problem under examination.

Heuristic scenario builder for power system operator training
Article Abstract:
The Heuristic Scenario Builder (HSB) is a knowledge-based training scenario builder for the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) Operating Training Simulator (OTS) that uses expert system technology and heuristic searches to identify training scenarios that fit trainee profiles and meet additional requirements. The HSB's expert system and heuristic techniques provide advanced and powerful techniques to find the appropriate scenarios. The HSB is composed of one expert system for selection and adaptation of an initial training state, one for the selection of a training goal and one for the scheduling of events that make up a training scenario. The HSB also incorporates artificial intelligence (AI) that integrates symbolic and numeric computing. Philadelphia Electric's OTS installation uses the HSB as part of their new generation OTS.
