Nonintrusive appliance load monitoring
Article Abstract:
Nonintrusive appliance load monitors determine the energy consumption of individual appliances turning on and off in an electric load based on analysis of the current and voltage of the total load measured at the interface to the power source. The technique simplifies energy consumption data collection by utilities, along with other applications. Previous techniques for gathering appliance load data required placing sensors on individual appliances, which was an intrusion onto the energy consumer's property. This technique is nonintrusive because it requires no such sensor. Power systems theory and communications theory are combined in this area: power consumption is decoded as an act of information transfer. Goals, applications, load models, appliance signatures, algorithms, prototypes, field-test results, current research directions, and the advantages and disadvantages of the approach relative to intrusive monitoring are examined.

Short-term load forecasting
Article Abstract:
Short-term load forecasting (STLF) is the prediction of the system load over a period ranging from one hour to a week. The role of STLF is on-line scheduling and security functions of an energy management system are reviewed, and the nature of the load and factors influencing its behavior are examined.
