Opportunities for advanced speech processing in military computer-based systems
Article Abstract:
Military applications for advanced speech processing technology are examined. Applications include digital narrow-band secure voice - STU-III, narrow-band secure voice for tactical applications, voice/data integration in computer networks, air traffic controller training, and speaker recognition and verification. Opportunities for advanced military applications of speech technology include integrated multirate voice/data communications terminals, interactive speech enhancement workstations and voice-controlled pilot's associate system. Problems for research include low-rate speech coding, noise and interference suppression and large-vocabulary continuous speech recognition. Brief descriptions of each application area are given.

Opportunities for advanced speech processing in military computer-based systems
Article Abstract:
Speech recognition technology must be developed and tested for training and battlefield requirements. The technology must enable very accurate recognition under conditions of high noise and speaker stress. A key problem with speech recognition is that the identification of the speaker cannot easily be discerned. Other speech recognition areas concern coding and digitization. Different forms of coding must be investigated to get sound into silicon, and military planners are requesting digital voice communication at speeds that will save bandwidth. A realistic, though far-off, goal of speech systems is that they recognize 95 percent of each sentence.
