The high-level synthesis of digital systems
Article Abstract:
High-level synthesis, the translation of an abstract behavioral description of a digital system to a register-transfer level structure, consists of several subtasks. These include compilation of the behavioral specification into into an internal representation (usually a data flow/control flow graph), transformation of the graph to optimize the efficiency of the end design, scheduling of operations into time steps, allocation of hardware elements for required processors and registers, connection of elements with multiplexing and busing to generate the basic data path structure, selection of modules to implement abstract hardware blocks, and design of controller to generate required control signals. Techniques for accomplishing these tasks include the use of scheduling algorithms, data path allocation, and rule-based systems. Future directions in high-level synthesis are discussed.

Design for reliability: the major challenge for VLSI
Article Abstract:
The development and use of computer aids for faster design synthesis and verification cycles has been prioritized at the expense of development of computer tools in other segments of the product design and manufacturing cycle. Difficulties in reliability due to scaling down of devices in advanced very-large-scale integration (VLSI) circuits has led to greater electric fields and current densities. Consequently, these situations cause a protracted debug and reliability qualification phase relative to the design synthesis phase. This phase must be shortened to lessen the marketing time for the product. A better understanding of reliability issues is necessary to cope with the changes in VLSI technologies. This segment of the design phase must be prioritized through the allocation of more resources and effort. The concept of design-in-reliability must also be emphasized.
