The potential of diamond and SiC electronic devices for microwave and millimeter-wave power applications
Article Abstract:
The potential of silicon carbide (SiC) and diamond for producing high-performance microwave and millimeter-wave electronic devices is studied, with it shown that both SiC and diamond have characteristics that may allow radiofrequency (RF) electron devices with performance similar to or greater than that of devices fabricated using silicon, gallium-arsenide (GaAs), and InP. Theoretical computer simulations of the metal semiconductor field-effect transistor (MESFET) and the impact avalanche transit-time (IMPATT) diode are used in the analysis. Also studied is bipolar junction transistor (BJT) operation using a large signal microwave equivalent circuit model. MESFETs are structurally simple devices that can be fabricated easily in diverse semiconductor materials.

Millimeter wave antennas
Article Abstract:
Leaky-wave antennas created from open millimeter (mm) waveguides and integrated antennas such as microstrip antennas are two of the most active areas in the study of antenna theory. Leaky-wave antennas are based on the perturbation of an open mm-waveguide so that it radiates in a controlled manner as a leaky-wave line source. Integrated antennas are solid state systems that integrate the radiating elements along with signal processing and control features on one chip. Another feature of integrated antennas is that they combine active and passive circuits, along with the radiating element in a monolithic package. Developments in these areas are summarized.

Millimeter-wave and terahertz integrated circuit antennas
Article Abstract:
A comprehensive review of integrated circuit antennas for millimeter and terahertz applications is presented. Recent research has solved many of the problems associated with electrically thick dielectric substrates, such as substrate modes and poor radiation patterns. The integrated horn antenna, the dielectric-filled parabola, the Fresnel plate antenna, the dual-slot antenna, and the log-periodic and spiral antennas on extended hemispherical lenses are among the many new antennas that have resulted in excellent performance at millimeter-wave frequencies. The efficiency definitions used with planar antennas is reviewed as well.
