Transmit/receive module technology for X-band active array radar
Article Abstract:
Phased array radar system developments using X-band transmit/receive (T/R) module technology are summarized. Nearly 30 years ago the role for microwave solid-state technology in airborne phased array radars was visualized. Phased array apertures provide tactical aircraft with enhanced radar system performance. The low reliability inherent with tube-type transmitters is overcome by the application of solid-state microwave technology to phased array apertures. The connection of each radiating element in the array to a T/R microwave component creates an active electronically scanned aperture. The US Air Force began the Molecular Electronics for Radar Applications (MERA) program in 1964; it was an exploratory development effort to examine the concept of implementing an X-band all solid-state radar, and resulted in the development of the first T/R module.

Basic array theory
Article Abstract:
Basic antenna array theory is discussed. The characteristics of planar, linear, phased and conformal arrays are discussed with regard to their patterns, beamwidth and directivity. A linear antenna array involves equally spaced elemental radiators configured in a straight line. These arrays can also be wrapped around a curved surface such as a cylinder. Planar arrays organize the radiators in a two-dimensional pattern over a plane. Rectangular arrays are a variety of planar array that consists of linear arrays. Conformal arrays are also studied with regard to their special characteristics. Electromagnetic equations that cover the design of antenna arrays are presented.
