A few uncommon engineers
Article Abstract:
Electrical engineers make many kinds of contributions to and impacts on their profession, the industry and the world at large; 26 such individuals are briefly profiled. These include industry leaders such NEC Corp Sr Exec VP Michiyuki Uenohara, Dolby Laboratories founder Ray M. Dolby, former Texas instruments CEO J Fred Bucy, TRW cofounder Simon Ramo, and Apple cofounder Steve Wozniak. Among the leading researchers and academicians described are Bell Labs research VP Arno Penzias, linear induction motor researcher Eric Laithwaite, Univ of WA professor Irene Peden, Los Angeles Dept of Water and Power engineer David J Melvoid, and astronaut Judith Resnick. A student engineer is also profiled because of IEEE's belief in the importance of student members.

Self-developers: why the new engineers work
Article Abstract:
There is a new generation of professionals for whom the main work goal is self development. They are defined by values, not by age, but people under 40 are more likely to belong, primarily because of changes in social character that began in the sixties. Engineers who manage and work with this new breed need to understand their values and their motivation. A sense of independence is a chief characteristic. They must be given opportunities to develop marketplace skills, and, although critical of management hierarchy, they will reluctantly move up. Self-developers are natural facilitators, but a large portion have a problem with making long-term commitments.
