A good random number generator for microcomputers
Article Abstract:
Responding to the need for a random number generator with a long cycle and good statistical properties, George S. Fishman and Louis R. Moore began an exhaustive testing program to discover the best multipliers for the multiplicative congruential random number generator with modulus 2(superscript 31)-1. This modulus, which is the largest prime number that fits in a 32-bit computer word, will not repeat itself before 2,147,483,646 random numbers have been generated when it is used with a suitable multiplier. The two men used a theoretical test based on the lattice properties of the points determined by pairs, triples,..., of random numbers in dimensions up through the sixth. In this way they were able to test all of the possible full-cycle multipliers and reduce the list of acceptable ones to 207.

On the Interpretation of Variables
Article Abstract:
Correct usage is discussed for concepts and terminology in various types of models, namely simulation, regression, and user's mental models. Therefore, a strict distinction is made between variables and parameters; also, different measurement scales are distinguished. Relationships with validation, risk analysis, sensitivity analysis, optimization and control are investigated.
