A higher level of synthesis: as logic synthesis tools develop, they are helping the engineer conceptualize IC designs and not just implement them

Article Abstract:

Design synthesis software systems are emerging to greatly simplify the process of integrated circuit (IC) design automation. Such logic synthesis tools can operate at several levels of abstraction. The topmost level focuses on the overall requirements of the design, the microarchitectural level focuses on a precise description of the clock cycle, the logic level focuses on combinational logic expressed as Boolean equations, and the system level focuses on scheduling and partitioning. Today's general-purpose synthesis tools accept hardware description language (HDL) input at the logic, microarchitectural and RTL levels. Many engineers are choosing to build their designs via the top-down approach, where the system is first specified via an abstract set of requirements, with the details added as the design progresses.

The Personal Computer Invades Higher Education

Article Abstract:

Colleges are requiring students to use personal computers and some are linking them to school networks. The personal computers allow students to avoid mainframe problems, become fluent in computers, and assist in laboratory work. Much of the busywork of problem solving can be done on the computer while also allowing communication with the library and between students. These distributed systems also turn out to be cheaper than larger systems. A chart illustrates schools requiring personal computers.

Engineers with a Difference

Article Abstract:

New programs in technology are taking shape at universities such as Carnegie-Mellon, Duke, and Washington University. Forming hybrid engineers from graduate and undergraduate work, the programs have been difficult and jobs came hard at first. The skills derived from these programs are valuable today.
