Air valve is the torque of the town

Article Abstract:

A specially shaped valve that enables better flow of air into an engine has been developed. The WorldPower valve has been designed to be curved rather than flat, allowing air to rush over its surface aerodynamically. The valve has been incorporated into a throttle body and its performance has been benchmarked against a standard throttle body. The valve could be used to improve fuel injection engines and advantages include higher torque, lower fuel consumption, faster acceleration and reduced hydrocarbon emissions.

Knowledge is fluid power

Article Abstract:

The fluid power industry, which has long realised the importance of experience, is seeking to solve the industry-wide problem of losing 'old hands' to retirement. The British Fluid Power Association is devising new training courses which aim to fill some of the industry's existing education gaps. To date, formal training in fluid power has bee rare but changes to the UK education system mean that new courses, ranging from electronic control to pipe fitting, will be available.

Keeping track of the latest technology

Article Abstract:

Global positioning system (GPS) technology is now being used in a wide range of civilian applications. Most recently, GPS has been adopted by AEA Technology Rail for its low adhesion warning system, which identifies leaves on railway tracks. GPS is also being used to prevent cows from wandering too far away. In this application, the cows are fitted with collars connected to GPS. If the cows wander too far from their correct field, then a small electric shock is applied.
