All washed up in Seaside
Article Abstract:
Celebrated US architect Donald Macdonald is critical of the homogeneity of modern housing developments in his book Democratic Architecture. He is particularly scathing in his comments about the new settlement of Seaside on the Gulf of Florida, portraying it as a countryside suburb. Macdonald believes that mixed use development is the key to successful planning, with his ideal living unit being made from wood, square, detached and with the space for expansion.

Gummer blames crisis on councils
Article Abstract:
John Gummer, environment secretary, believes that the decline of town centres is due, in many cases, to neglect by local authorities, and is not the fault of out of town developments. He believes that cities need constant improvement and authorities should make centres better for people by providing good car parking facilities and bring homes back to town centres.
