Chemical squonks

Article Abstract:

Bisallylic alcohol, and other compounds that are unstable at STP, catalyze their own decompositions/rearrangements, leave trails that can be characterized, and often are fragile in ways that cannot be anticipated are compared to the squonk in this semi-serious article. The squonk is a mythical, morose beast of the hemlock forests of Pennsylvania and dissolves itself in tears if unable to escape. On frosty, moonlit nights it might be trapped as it cries less vigorously. Exposing the sulfide group of the anticancer drug calicheamicin brings on a squonk. Compounds discussed include an acid or ester protected before addition of the propenyl anion in the bisallylic alcohol project, alkoxides of the 3-hydroxy-1,5-hexadienes, prephenic acid, the first ribozymes identified, the intron, and intein precursor proteins, that is wild-type precursor protein squonks, or squonkeins. A compound that can be in a bottle on a shelf overnight is not a squonk. The tears may be those of the chemist. Sometimes debunking of chemical squonk stories takes place.

The Goldilocks principle in chemistry

Article Abstract:

The Goldilocks principle is used in chemistry as a preanalysis tool, not for forecasting. The principle has been applied in many disciplines, the best known science examples being in astronomy and cosmology. The first use in chemistry was in combinatorial chemistry and drug discovery, an interdisciplinary field requiring proper collaborative matching of resources from various areas. Several issues are listed, and topics include the computation dilemma, timing, and protecting intellectual property. The Goldilocks principle is a guide, not a rule, and when some principles are too rigid, some too vague, it is just right. Companies/organizations whose work is discussed, in addition to 'Chemical Abstracts,' include Beilstein, and Molecular Design. The Goldilocks and the Three Bears story is recounted.
