Clipping the wings of conversions: a rapid decline in the species, prompted the Barn Owl Trust to publish the findings of a five-year study aimed at planners and developers
Article Abstract:
The Barn Owl Trust has undertaken a major research project into the effect of barn conversions on barn owls, the loss of barn owl sites and the availability of alternative sites. Its report Barn Owls on Site - a Guide for Developers and Planners, gives details of how to undertake an initial site survey, and it calls for provision for barn owls to be incorporated into all rural barn conversions.

Article Abstract:
The government is preparing to launch a new regime to tackle the problems linked with contaminated land, and to determine who should have responsibility for cleaning it up. Original proposals were for a register of contaminated land, although there was opposition from property investors, landowners and surveyors. The resulting consultation papers have led to the new guidelines.

Guardians of the peace? there are fundamental differences in the way planners and the public view issues like hazardous chemical facilities
Article Abstract:
A study of a random group of planners compared their key considerations for residents in the context of hazardous plants and those of the public. It found that planners attached more importance to the visual impact of the installation, and transportation of dangerous substances. Local residents saw compensation and property devaluation as the greater priority.
