U.S. pushes foreign firms dumping steel
Article Abstract:
Steel imports to the US have jumped by 47%, while the foreign share of the domestic steel market has increased from 25% to 36% since 1998. This has resulted in up to 10,000 layoffs of domestic steel workers. A consortium of twelve US steel produces and two unions lobbied for an investigation by the Dept of Commerce (DOC) on the antidumping practices of Japan, Brazil and Russia. In its decision, the DOC ruled that guilty companies from Brazil and Japan must pay to the US Customs Dept before imports will be allowed.

Geothermal brines yield power and zinc
Article Abstract:
CalEnergy Company Inc plans to construct a geothermal power plant in California's Imperial Valley that will employ a zinc-recovery process to produce 30,000 metric tons/yr of zinc when it begins operation in mid- 2000. A commercial ion-exchange resin is employed to extract zinc ions from the spent geothermal brine. Process expenses are estimated to be comparable to those of the best smelters.
