Contractors in control
Article Abstract:
Innovations to simplify the design of building energy management systems (bems) will enable the electrical contractor to fit the new systems. The complexity the bems has lead to the growth of specialist control engineers but the simplification in the construction and design of the new modular control systems will mean that specialist expertise in no longer required for installations. The bems are installed in shops, schools and commercial buildings to run a variety of operations such as the alarm system, logging data communication and controlling heating systems.

From historical to hi-tech
Article Abstract:
Complications arise when an historical building is to be converted into office space, especially if the building is listed, since there are many constraints to retain characteristics. Disruption to the fabric of the building must be kept to a minimum and cabling kept out of sight. One problem area for electrical contractors is a service area catering for large equipment items and cable distribution. Telecommunications and information technology systems can use the minimum of cabling by being cordless. An unobtrusive fire alarm system must also be used.
