Conundrums of critical capacity: a methodology for putting theory into practice in assessing the environmental capacity of historic cities is released this week

Article Abstract:

A new report Environmental Capacity: A Methodology for Historic Cities, is to be launched which will attempt to apply the concept to an entire city. The approach to Chester could be applied to many cities throughout Europe according to the authors. It could also be applied to resort towns or larger cities that have to cope with a large amount of visitors. It will help planners identify indicators critical to environmental capacity.

Fielding schemes with a competitive edge

The South East Regional Leisure Group has recently held a one-day conference, dubbed 'Setting your Sites on Leisure', to discuss links between leisure and planning. The social and economic importance of regeneration was stressed by speaker Lord Inglewood, parliamentary under-secretary at the Department of National Heritage. An overview of the subjects discussed at the conference are included.

Bleeding Herts: with Hertfordshire set to absorb London's housing problems, arguments are ensuing about how much extra the county can possibly take

Article Abstract:

Hertfordshire will have to loosen restrictions on its green belt to meet demands for new housing by 2016, and is proposing revisions to the draft structure plan for 1991-2011. However the county believes there is scope for the trend for housing development in built up areas to continue.
