Conversions on the road to renewal

Article Abstract:

Churches inevitably become redundant as populations shift, and this need not necessarily be a problem. However, empty church buildings can be an eyesore in city centres where redevelopment work is being undertaken. It is often difficult to find an alternative use for a redundant church building, especially if it is the subject of a restrictive covenant. They often have more space than is required by most potential users, and refurbishment can rob them of their original character.

Aggregates on the road to nowhere

Article Abstract:

The UK government's announcement that it has decided to review the road-building programme seems to confirm the view which has been held for some time by environmentalists - that there are serious problems with MPG6, the minerals planning guidance. They believe that the levels established for aggregate extraction do not take into account the possibility of an economic decline, or the fact that aggregates are particularly vulnerable to economic fluctuations.
