The success of two new drugs produced with genetic engineering technology has resulted in the restructuring of research and development in Japan's biotechnology industry. The new drugs, interferon and erythropoitin, have triggered the streamlining of many drug companies' biotechnology operations and the new focus on the lucrative pharmaceutical sector. Interferon sales skyrocketed to more than $1 billion in 1992 while sales of erythropoitin have also been flourishing.
