Desktop simulation: modeling for managers
Article Abstract:
This article discusses the potential of merging expert systems and simulation to provide a platform for sensitivity analysis by managers. The authors here developed a desktop simulation, a generalized simulation for a class of problem. Creating an interface with an expert system shell, the authors used a front-end to allow for customization of the generalized model to the current parameters. The front-end edits the simulation code; the user may then run the simulation. This iterative approach allows for rapid consideration of a number of prototypes based on various parameters of interest. (Reprinted by permission of the publisher.)

Validation of simulation models using decision theory
Article Abstract:
To determine the necessary resources for sufficient validation of a simulation model is an extremely difficult and subjective task. There are two potential trouble spots for individuals validating the project. First, they may overvalidate a model and consequently waste resources. Second, they may insufficiently validate a model; consequently, the results of the model may be in error. In this paper, the validation process is divided into two separate phases. Within each phase, techniques using decision theory concepts are presented to aid in the validation process. (Reprinted by permission of the publisher.)
