Speedier HPLC

Article Abstract:

Imtakt Corp of Kyoto, Japan, is introducing ultra-high-resolution high- performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) columns in Apr 2000. The HPLC columns, which have a theoretical plate number of 48,000, are touted to be capable of performing analyses in half-the-time required by conventional techniques. The faster analysis is made possible through the use of 3- micrometer-diameter beads of silica gel packing instead of the conventional 5-micrometer-diameter beads.

A new ceramic

Article Abstract:

Researchers at the National Industrial Research Institute of Nagoya has developed a new porous ceramic that is better and cheaper than cordierite, which is used as a heat-resistant catalyst carrier for vehicle emissions. The novel ceramic is composed of equal amounts of dolomite and synthesized zirconia powders and O.5 wt% lithium fluoride powder. It has a narrow size distribution of about one micron and a melting point of 2,050 degrees C, which is higher than cordierite's 1,360 degree C.

Drip and drop in column internals

Article Abstract:

Nagaoka International has developed a new structured packing that reduces the size of column internals to one-fifth of their former size. On the other hand, Gesip GmbH has designed a new tray that allows gas to flow by as much as 30 m/sec, with no liquid entrapment. Koch-Glitsch has also built a distributor tube that will allow distillate fluid from the drip tube to fall directly into an open, square box or plate with outlet holes in each corner. Norton Chemical Process is offering a low-flow distributor that divides the flow without using small orifices.
