EPA lists two wastes as hazardous
Article Abstract:
The US Environmental Protection Agency has classified K174 and K175, two wastes produced by the chlorinated aliphatics industry, as hazardous under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act. K174 is a wastewater treatment sludge generated from the production of ethylene dichloride or vinyl chloride monomer while K175 is generated from the production of vinyl chloride monomer. The agency's classfication means that the industry will be subject to stringent standards concerning the wastes.

Phenol desorption from activated carbo induced by ultrasound
Article Abstract:
Researchers at the Chemical Engineering and Biomedical Engineering Departments at the University of Michigan have discovered a way to ease the desorption of phenol from activated carbon and polymeric resin adsorbents. The process involves the use of ultrasound and was found to significantly enhance desorption rates in the presence of ultrasound at 40 kHz. Researchers believe that the ultrasound desorption method could applt to other organic sorbates or similar sorbents.

Select the right hydrocarbon molecular weight correlation
Article Abstract:
Various methods have been developed to predict molecular weights of heavy hydrocarbon fractions. The application of the 10 common methods on two different crude oils shows that several equations produce a wide range of molecular weight estimates. To determine the appropriate technique, it is important to undestand how these techniques produce different results and how they affect process simulation, design and unit operation.
