Mythology lives

Article Abstract:

The Tooling and Manufacturing Assn (TMA) launched a campaign to increase the number of qualified entry level candidates in the Chicago, IL, area as a solution to the difficulty in finding precision metalworkers. Many companies have closed because they couldn't find skilled labor, not because of diminishing markets, labor rates and die makers. There are around 1,500 job vacancies in the Chicago area, and Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates reveal a possible 6% annual increase until 2005.

Job training - toward what end?

Article Abstract:

Job training has been an issue in the 1992 presidential campaign, but the neglected topic is what industries should be the focus of that training. Entire industries have disappeared as well as jobs. Even small business, which accounted for all the job growth in the 1980s, has fallen off. Until the nation's manufacturing sector can be revived, training needs cannot be predicted. Emerging technologies should be funded to assist industries that produce needed products.
