Expert Systems and Simulation
Article Abstract:
Artificial intelligence and expert systems are the latest buzzwords and the hottest topics in the scientific community today. Some experts are proclaiming that artificial intelligence (AI) has already emerged as one of the most significant technologies of this century. Proponents are declaring that it will completely revolutionize management and the way computers are used. If these claims are even half true, then AI is bound to have a profound effect upon the art and science of simulation. This paper will provide an overview of this rapidly evolving field, examine the potential of AI (and more particularly, expert systems) in simulation and attempt to explore the probable impact as well as forecast likely future directions. Applications of Artificial Intelligence: Expert Systems for Industrial Applications
Article Abstract:
Expert systems can exceed the performance of the human experts who have contributed to the knowledge base. Such systems can combine and thus augment the input of several experts, can make extremely fast decisions, can operate in hostile environments and are capable of precise timing and high reliability. Development of an industrial expert system requires an understanding of object-oriented programming, an adoption of a flexible design methodology, and the ability of the system designers to identify and solve problems on an interdisciplinary scale.

Bell Labs Programs Computer to Make Expert Decisions
Article Abstract:
Bell Labs has developed an 'expert system' called Automated Cable Expertise (ACE) to assist in telephone cable maintenance. Data from dozens of cable experts, as well as textbook material, was fed into ACE. The program can diagnose cable trouble spots far more rapidly than human experts and can run without human intervention.
