Adsorbents corner green & niche markets

Article Abstract:

Makers of zeolites and inorganic adsorbents are using modeling techniques, 'designer' software and predictive algorithms to customize adsorbents for niche applications in pharmeceuticals, specialty chemicals, industrial gas production and food processing. Customizing compounds to be highly selective to particular pollutants and still resist degradation will enable zeolites to advance from vapor- to water-phase remediation.

The Web redefines 'hands off' monitoring

Article Abstract:

Emerging technologies are making Web-based equipment monitoring, a development that offers huge savings for the chemical process industries, a reality. This was evident during the 17th International Pump Users Symposium in Houston, TX, the National Manufacturing Week in Chicago, IL, and the Interphex show in New York, all held in Mar 2000. The events served as venues for showcasing a number of Web-based, wireless and remote monitoring technologies that are ready to be adopted on the Internet.

Flame retardants: Halogen debate sizzles but has little impact

Article Abstract:

Great Lakes Chemical Co., a flame retardant supplier, is broadening its product line because of the consumers' preference for more eco-friendly materials. Brominated additives are being linked to to health and safety and envirommental issues while halogenated plastics are being blamed for the corrosive gases released. Meanwhile, nonhalogenates are being studied as they produce little smoke and stops flames when burned. Harold James, Great Lakes director of marketing, said nonhalogenates have made little impact as the use of brominated flame retardants is still prevalent.
