Telephone companies and cable operators are striving to improve the quality of customer service provided by the the newly introduced video dial-tone services, whereby users gain access to menu of services from the information provider. Consumers can use the dial-tone facility for various utilitarian purposes including access to video and multimedia applications on offer.

The widely preferred architecture for designing interactive services is the in-tandem usage of optical fibers and coaxial cables.
