Guiding principles for improving the construction industry
Article Abstract:
The structural engineering industry can be vastly improved through new guiding principles which can be grouped into three categories, namely, professional development, communication and teamwork and enhancement of quality and efficiency. The first group can be achieved through improved academic requirements, internship, ethics and social responsibility and continuing education. The second group involves teamwork, communication and acknowledgment. The last group includes selection of team members, peer review, insurance and mediation-arbitration agreement.

Benchmarking: performance improvement toward competitive advantage
Article Abstract:
The concept of benchmarking in the construction industry is becoming widely accepted as more engineers realize the many benefits of its application. A research project was conducted in South Africa to establish productivity benchmark values for a variety of construction operations. It is suggested that these values be considered as benchmarks upon which to compare the productivity actually achieved so that further steps towards improvement can be taken.

Article Abstract:
A concerted effort from all parties involved is an important component in ensuring the success of a construction project. Owners, architects, construction managers, contractors, and subcontractors have to establish a good business relationship to avoid claims and lawsuits which adversely affect the project. Moreover, the people involved have to possess positive attitudes, sufficient knowledge of the industry, and excellent managerial skills.
