Harmony in the EC: Britain's harmonisation with Europe means it's all change in the world of electrotechnical standards, including those concerning the cable management sector

Article Abstract:

The harmonisation of British cable management standards with European Standards will mean changes to the way products are specified. Products involved include conduit, which will need to be classified according to different performance levels, trunking and ducting, and cable trays and ladders, for which a complete standards is proposed. There will be one standard to cover all types of cable tie. The changes will move the focus away from material characteristics, type and dimensions, to performance in use.

Who's the fire starter?

Article Abstract:

The calls for changes to the performance of fire performance cable appears to be led by the commercial concerns of cable makers rather than genuine safety concerns. Delta Special Cables has told specifiers and designers that cables conforming to BS6387 standards are safe to use, be they pliable or mineral. It is misleading to suppose that pliable cables do not meet the UK's fire performance criteria.
