IPC pushes for shorter depreciation schedule
Article Abstract:
The Institute for Interconnecting and Packaging Electronic Circuits will propose a shortening of the existing five-year depreciation schedule for US printed-wiring-boards and electronics industries to only three years in Congress on June 1998. The current schedule, which equates to a 20% annual depreciation, does not allow US firms to be competitive with Asian firms which enjoy as much as 80% in write offs per year. The proposal, introduced as the Printed Circuit Investment Act of 1997, would allow local firms faster modernization of equipment.

'Death tax deserves to die.'
Article Abstract:
Industry members expressed full support over a bill which would eliminate estate or 'death' taxes for the next ten years. The bill, sponsored by Reps Jennifer Dunn and John Tanner, seeks to reduce estate taxes levied to firms by 5% each year, until the top rate reaches zero. A number of industry lobbyists, including National Assn of Manufacturers and Precision Metalforming Assn pledged support for the bill, claiming that it would lead to significant financial benefits to family-owned businesses and small enterprises.
