ISO/Microsoft standard document format defeated
Article Abstract:
Microsoft Corp.'s application to have its Office Open XML (OOXML) accepted as a standard failed to garner the required vote for its fast-track standardization. The ballot resolution process requires at least 66.66% of the votes cast by the bodies participating in the International Organization for Standardization. Details of the software company's request for proprietary document approval are discussed.

Patents: A designer's friend or just a burden?
Article Abstract:
The formation of the European Union (EU) caused quite a few problems for manufacturers or developers who had to register the patents in all EU countries and translate the patents in all languages. Under the community patent however, the application will now have to be in English, French or German and only claims will have to be translated in all eleven official languages.
