I'll tell you what I want: with the election looming and those lovable fellows John, Paddy and Tony in full muck-raking, sleaze-making mode, what do people actually want to see from the new government?
Article Abstract:
Leading industry figures were canvassed to find out what they would like from the next government. Peter Carver, chairman of the Electrical Industry Forum (EIF) and David Dossett, director of the Electrical Installation Equipment Manufacturers' Association, feel that regeneration of the construction industry is important for the electrical industry. This could be achieved by upgrading housing stock or the maintenance of mortgage relief. Nigel Ellis, director of administration in the Electrical Wholesalers Federation and Ernest Magog, director of the Lighting Industry Federation believe that the cash needed for such regeneration could come from the release of capital held by local authorities. Other issues of concern to industry is the lack of training, and environmental aspects.

Shiny happy people
Article Abstract:
The 1997 Survey of Professional Engineers and Technicians reports that 60% of technicians are content with their salary, 85% are happy with their training and 60% would advise others to go into the profession. The average salary for a technician is 26,311 pounds sterling. Incorporated engineers earn more than engineering technicians, with 53% getting about 30,000 pounds, while registered engineers earn an average of 37,000 pounds. Engineers should seriously registering with the engineering institute because it leads to better promotion and salary prospects.

Burning issue
Article Abstract:
Inadequate and misleading information on the safety of pliable electrical cables has lead to electrical cable manufacturer BICC Pyrotenax starting a campaign to improve standards within the industry. The need to raise industry standards is being questioned by pliable cable manufacturer Delta Crompton Cables, which claims no deaths or injuries have been caused by faulty pliable cables during the period from 1994 to 1996. BICC is seeking to have a new test put in place which would put cables through three types of assessment.
