Industrial electronics
Article Abstract:
Integrating automation equipment from different vendors has always been difficult. Integrating the software managing distributed systems and the factory database is proving equally difficult. An integrated software package is needed. Embedding thirty-two bit microprocessors as controllers in robots and machine tools gives the machines decision-making capabilities. Embedding faster microprocessors as controllers provides applications for flash electrically programmable ROMs and bipolar CMOS chips. The market for industrial electronics has been reshaped by mergers and acquisitions, particularly Tandem Computer's acquisition of Ungermann-Bass and the continuing divestment of Gould Inc.

A plug-in motorcycle: Brammo's Enertia puts bikers on the grid
Article Abstract:
The $15,000 Brammo Enertia electric motorcycle draws only 150 amperes to stretch its battery life in order to reach a range of 75 kilometers. The motorcycle is powered by an array of six lithium-phosphate cells and has a top speed of 80 km/h. This elegantly designed bike runs quietly to give riders a peaceful ride.
